about

This song has gone through many changes over the years but the music was first inspired by John Butler Trio, Sublime and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I just started strumming a series of galloping chord progressions on my fender 12-string acoustic guitar. Eventually I had to play it on bass while singing; so, I kept the bass relatively simple (Sorry!) and changed up the chorus to what I wrote on the bass. The bridge came out of nowhere, when I was working it just popped in my head and had to transcribe it to guitar. The lead guitar work was a trial and error to see what worked and what didn’t: thanks Ryley for giving me some honest feedback because this song could have turned out quite differently than it is.
The lyrics are inspired by someone that I cared for; who, was being mistreated by her employer; so much so, that they tried to entrap her by giving her something for free (the new owners' gross coffee sample) and than accused her of stealing it in a crowded restaurant. Professional?!? This P.O.S., as well as the other co-conspirators, fired her for this bogus "crime" and didn't not pay her severance or any of overtime or holiday pay that they owed her for. Understandably devastated, she returned to our home completely destroyed. I consoled her the best that I could and reminded of her legal rights; which, after she gained her composure back contact the Labour Board of Canada and filed a case against them. Now, this person is known for going over and beyond her duties to an exemplary job and some jackass don’t like that because they are morons and like their lives more difficult I guess. Long story short she fought back and got everything that was owed to her and found employment with a boss that sees and appreciates her strong work ethic. I was sitting on the music for the song with no lyrical content until this situation inspired me. Please enjoy!

lyrics

Ivory Towers

O, my muse,
Don’t you fall you their clever rouse,
Whether you win or lose,
It’s down to whatever you choose,
And all those suckers are fools,
Thinking that they can break,
And bend all those rules,
But here’s the exclusive news,
We’re gonna leave all those suckers,
Black and bruised,

(When we bring the fire)
(Chorus)
So, let’s start some fires,
To burn down these Ivory Towers,
Because no flowers,
Reach the heights of Ivory Towers,

And liven’ for yourself,
You’ll never find that self-fulfilling wealth,
And messing with my baby,
Is detrimental to your health,
And I know what transpires,
For those filthy, fucking liars,
And those that conspire,
Will be crushed by their collapsing empires,

(Pre-chorus/Chorus)
(When we bring the fire)
(Chorus)
So, let’s start some fires,
To burn down these Ivory Towers,
Because no flowers,
Reach the heights of Ivory Towers,
And we have struck the hour,
To remind them whose got the power,
And we won't stay inline,
Keeping our nose to the grind,

And shits going to blow like a geyser,
When everybody catches on and gets a little wiser,
And all those misers,
Will be leaping from their sky risers,

I understand why you got your head in the sand,
But it’s hard make a mountain,
When you’re face deep inside a canyon,
And the more you make,
Equals the more they take,
The more they try to break you and rape you,
And have the nerve to call it a break through,

(Chorus)
